Why is now so important?

Over the next year, global leaders will come together to make a series of important decisions on climate, nature, oceans and people that will set the direction for much of our planet’s future.

That’s why we need to secure a New Deal for Nature and People, one that recognises the inextricable link between climate, nature and achieving our sustainable development goals.

To achieve a New Deal for Nature and People, we need to tackle climate change, restore nature and fix the food system and we need businesses, governments and the general public to come together in support of the new deal.

A New Deal for Nature and People relies on the ambitious outcomes of five UN decisions:

1) World leaders put nature at the top of the political agenda by signing a planetary emergency declaration and action plan at the UN's 75th Birthday (UNGA).

2) The Convention on Biological Diversity in China (CBD COP 15) will agree a global framework to address biodiversity loss

3) Countries will ramp up action in their climate plans under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 26).

4) The environmental targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be renewed

5) A treaty on the governance of the high seas is set to be agreed at the Biodiversity beyond Nation Jurisdiction (BBNJ)

It’s only through an integrated response to climate change, nature loss and sustainable development that our planet, and its people, can thrive.
